UNITED IN CULTURE, FAITH & CELEBRATION: PNG 50TH INDEPENDENCE IN SYDNEY! In September 2025, Papua New Guinea marked its 50th Independence Anniversary—a golden jubilee of nationhood, progress, and pride. In Sydney, the milestone was honoured through a series of vibrant community-led events, coordinated by SydWan in collaboration with the PNG Consulate in Sydney. Over four weekends, the PNG diaspora came together in celebration—through cultural expression, worship, storytelling, and formal gatherings—all united in the spirit of wantok. 6 September – Boat Cruise: Setting the Tone Festivities began on 6 September with a symbolic harbour cruise—an ode to PNG’s seafaring heritage. Against the backdrop of the Sydney skyline, community members gathered on the water to reconnect and reflect on the nation's journey. The cruise provided a relaxed yet meaningful setting that set a joyful tone for the weeks ahead. 7 September – Thanksgiving Lotu: Honouring Our Faith The following day, 7 September, a Thanksgiving Lotu was held at Turramurra Uniting Church. This spiritual gathering gave thanks for 50 years of independence and acknowledged the role of faith in PNG’s development. Through scripture, song and prayer, the community paid tribute to the past while asking for continued blessings and unity for the future. 13 September – Cultural Day: Showcasing Our Identity On 13 September, Parramatta became a hub of PNG pride during the PNG 50th Anniversary Cultural Day. This day-long celebration featured traditional sing-sings, bilas, lots of food and cultural exhibitions. Highlights included powerful performances by the Chauka Call Manus dancers, the MILK Cultural Group (visiting from PNG), and Matavai Pacific Cultural Arts. The park was alive with rhythm, colour, and the sounds of shared heritage, drawing in curious park goers and providing an important platform for cross-cultural understanding. More than just a display, the day was a show of cultural identity. It was a clear reminder that although we are far from home, our culture continues to thrive. 27 September – Gala Ball: Reflection and Celebration The PNG@50 celebrations ended on high with a spectacular Gala Ball on 27 September at Hornsby RSL. This formal event gathered the community in a night of elegance, unity and pride. The evening included a three-course dinner, cultural performances, speeches, and live music by JuGu Gaitah and Gee Ruun, which brought the dance floor to life. Keynote speeches were delivered by His Excellency Mr John Kali, PNG High Commissioner to Australia, and Mrs Sandra Ulaiwi, both of whom left lasting impressions. HE Mr Kali underscored the importance of embracing technology not as a threat to tradition, but as a tool to amplify it. He also called for inclusiveness: "Every child in every village must be given the opportunity to thrive—no one must be left behind or left out." Mrs Ulaiwi honoured the contributions of all generations by highlighting: The Past – those who laid the foundations, The Present – the torchbearers of today, and The Future – the generation who will carry PNG forward and onto the global stage. The evening was both glamorous and heartfelt, providing a space not only to celebrate 50 years, but to reflect on what the next 50 might hold. A Community in Motion Across each event, a powerful narrative emerged—one of unity, resilience, and vision. These celebrations reminded the diaspora that being Papua New Guinean is not confined to geography. Our identity lives through the stories we tell, the languages we speak, the songs we sing, and the way we show up for one another, wherever we are. What made these celebrations special was their intergenerational spirit. Children, youth, elders and new arrivals all contributed. Whether through dancing, cooking, speaking or organising—each person played a role in strengthening our collective bond. Looking Ahead: A Legacy in the Making As the curtain closes on the 50th Anniversary celebrations, the focus now turns forward. The SydWan committee sees this moment not only as a celebration of the past, but as a launching pad for the future—a future where PNG heritage is actively lived, where youth are empowered, and where community thrives both at home and in the diaspora. Papua New Guinea has come a long way in 50 years—and the diaspora has walked proudly alongside her. Sydney’s celebrations were more than a reflection of where we’ve been—they were a powerful reminder of who we are, and where we’re going. Happy 50th Independence, 🇵🇬 Papua New Guinea. May the next 50 years be even brighter.

First half of 2025 in review: March & April! Greetings, wantoks! Welcome to the first edition of SydWan Nius. Stay tuned for updates on the activities our Association has in store for you. The first 'Welkam Bung' in March at Parramatta Park was a blast! We followed up with another successful gathering of wantoks on Anzac Day (Friday) in Campbelltown's Koshigaya Park. This was mainly to accomodate wantoks who are unable to take part in Saturday activities. Both events were a success with lots of food, drinks and great vibes to go around - even the rain couldn't dampen the spirits at Campbelltown. It was awesome to see new faces and catch up with familiar ones.
